
Compression socks versus regular sports socks: what's the difference?
A regular sports sock can also feel tight, so what's the real difference with a compression sock? Good question, and the answer isn't that one is good and the other is bad. What they both do

When standing for long periods, the difference is clearer, and we should mention it. Garcia et al. (2023, Human Factors) had security guards work a twelve-hour shift with regular socks, or with compression. With regular socks, lower leg volume, fatigue, and discomfort increased; in both compression groups, these changes did not occur. For those who stand for a long time, compression demonstrably adds something that a regular sock does not offer.
Who is what for?
A regular sports sock is perfectly adequate for short, calm training sessions without complaints of heavy legs, or if you are primarily looking for cushioning and ventilation. Compression adds value for long-term exertion, recovery, travel, or a day of standing, and for those who prefer a tight, stable sock feel.
