
Compression for strength training and CrossFit: useful or useless?
In the gym, you increasingly see compression wear: knee-high socks for deadlifts, sleeves during a metcon. The question is whether it adds anything to your strength and performance, or if it's mostly about appearance. The honest answer is nuanced, and that nuance precisely helps you make a better choice. Not a miracle cure, but an honest story.
Does compression make you stronger?
No. A meta-analysis by da Silva and colleagues (2018, Sports Medicine), which pooled 23 randomized studies, found no significant advantage of lower leg compression during high-intensity exercise, neither for jump power, sprint, oxygen uptake, nor perceived exertion. Justin, physiotherapist and co-founder of KINEX, is clear about this from his background: "For a heavy squat or deadlift, technique, strength, and stability determine your performance. A compression sock will not add any magical kilograms to that. Anyone who expects a new personal record because they put on different socks is skipping a few training blocks."
Where compression can make a difference: recovery
The meta-analysis by Brown and colleagues (2017, Sports Medicine), based on 23 studies, found a small general recovery benefit, with the clearest effect on strength recovery in the hours and days after a heavy session. The evidence is not unambiguous: a stricter analysis by Négyesi and colleagues (2022, Sports Medicine) found no convincing strength preservation, while Li and colleagues (2025, Life) again observed small but significant effects. The common thread: a modest recovery benefit is plausible, especially after a lot of eccentric or jumping load, but it is not a guarantee.
The most consistent effect: less muscle soreness
What is consistently found in almost all research is a reduction in perceived muscle soreness. The broad review by Weakley and colleagues (2022, Sports Medicine), which mapped 183 studies, concluded that these types of perceptual outcomes improve more often than hard physiological measures. And CrossFit itself?
Direct research on CrossFit is scarce. That's not a problem as long as you're honest about it: the logic is that a metcon with many repetitions, running, and jumping is precisely the type of stress where comfort and recovery count, and compression fits well with that. It's plausible, not proven, and that's how we present it.
What compression is not
A joint brace. There is no convincing evidence that an elastic sock or sleeve mechanically stabilizes joints or prevents injuries during explosive movements (Weakley and colleagues, 2022). A sock restricts movement much less than a stiff brace, and a feeling of support is different from proven stability. Anyone with a knee or ankle problem is better off seeing a physiotherapist or getting a real brace.
Conclusion
Compression does not lift the bar for you. But as a tool for comfort and recovery, alongside the basics that truly make a difference, it deserves a place in your bag.
