
Buying compression socks: what should you look out for?
Buying compression socks is confusing: one brand claims "medical grade," another boasts a high mmHg number or a low elastane percentage. What should you really pay attention to? The most important lesson
If you remember one thing, it's this. KINEX summarizes it in one sentence: "Feeling tight is not the same as good compression." A sock that feels tight can have an excellent or a worthless pressure profile; you can't feel that from the outside. Therefore, you look at what has been measured and checked, not at what feels tightest or has the highest number.
Pay attention to measured, controlled pressure
A credible compression sock states a pressure range in mmHg, a reference point at the ankle, and ideally a graduated profile that tapers towards the calf. That this checking is necessary is shown by research: Lurie and Kistner (2014, Phlebology) tested 180 off-the-shelf stockings and found that more than eleven percent fell outside the stated pressure range. A number on the packaging is only meaningful if the brand can show that the product actually delivers what it promises. Fit determines the actual pressure
The same sock gives a different pressure on two different legs. KINEX: "Check whether there is a graduated profile and how the size is determined. Your shoe size alone is not always sufficient, because the circumference of your ankle and calf also determines how much pressure is created." Material, production and transparency
KINEX points to the broader picture: "Also pay attention to material, finish, breathability, and transparency about production. Where is it made, how is quality controlled, and can the brand explain what the product technically does?" European production can have advantages, such as shorter supply chains and smaller series, but "Made in Europe" is not in itself proof of quality. What counts is whether a brand can concretely show where and how production is controlled. What quality marks do and don't say
Be careful with quality marks that prove something different than you think. An OEKO-TEX certificate is about harmful substances in textiles, not about compression pressure. So a sock can be OEKO-TEX certified and still have a poor pressure profile. Always ask what a quality mark specifically covers.
