
Why the right pressure distribution is more important than the highest pressure
It's easy to assume that a tighter compression sock is a better one. But that's not how it works. In this article, we explain why the pressure distribution over your leg is more important than the highest number, and why KINEX deliberately opts for measured, controlled pressure instead of the tightest possible.
Feeling tight is not quality control
KINEX is clear about this: "We don't believe in 'as tight as possible'. A sock can feel incredibly tight and still have a poor or illogical pressure profile. Good gradual compression starts with controlled pressure around the ankle, after which that pressure gradually decreases towards the knee. That distribution is the core. A randomly tight sock mainly gives the feeling that something is happening, but feeling alone is not quality control."
Why distribution matters
The effect of compression is not a matter of a single number, but of an interplay: how much pressure is actually delivered, where it is located, how it tapers off, and whether the sock fits well. Research in patients with venous complaints shows how nuanced this is. Mosti and Partsch (2012, European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery) even found that sufficient pressure over the calf for the function of the calf muscle pump can be at least as important as high pressure at the ankle. The message is not that a high number is wrong, but that the profile tells the story.
The label doesn't predict everything
Products within the same compression class can measurably differ in actual pressure. Lurie and Kistner (2014, Phlebology) tested 180 off-the-shelf stockings and found that more than eleven percent fell more than 5 mmHg outside the specified range, and that even within a single pair, one sock could perform differently than the other. That is precisely why a measured profile is worth more than a class number alone.
More pressure is not always better
Higher pressure can be uncomfortable, constrict locally, and cause people to wear the sock less consistently. And a sock you don't wear does nothing. Comfort and wearability are therefore not secondary but part of the function. A controlled, well-distributed pressure that you can comfortably wear all day is practically more valuable than a high pressure that you take off after an hour.
Why KINEX measures
That's why KINEX measures and controls compression, instead of aiming for the highest number. As it says itself: "The goal is not that after five minutes you think: this feels bizarrely tight. The goal is support that is correct and that you can comfortably continue to wear during your training, workday, or recovery block." The highest pressure is not enough. What counts is the actual pressure delivered, where it is located, how it tapers off, and whether the sock fits well enough to wear consistently. Good compression feels like support, not constriction.
